Brianna finds a letter from Frank in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 91

With Roger gone back in time, Brianna wants to feel close to him. She heads to his study in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 91, where she finds a letter she doesn’t expect.

Brianna isn’t used to Roger being gone from her for too long anymore. While Mandy would be used to him being out of the house for work, Bree knows where he is and the danger that the past can bring. She understandably wants to feel as close to her husband as possible.

It ends up with her finding a letter from Frank. It was intended for her, but it looks like it wasn’t something he was ready to share. In fact, he makes it clear that he wants to tell her things that he can’t, and it’s clear that he’s been looking into the past in his own time. He knows things about Bree that she doesn’t.

I’m not sure if the letter has foreshadowing just yet. I guess there could be things that have already happened, but I do get the sense that Frank knows something is to come that we haven’t seen Bree do yet.

I expect to see this chapter play out, though. As much as we wouldn’t usually see the show do a letter, I expect this one because of the importance of knowing Frank researched when he asked Claire not to.

Let’s dive into An Echo in the Bone Chapter 91.

Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Bree looking for a way to feel close to Roger. That leads to her grabbing the snake that belongs to Jemmy. It helps, but it’s not enough. She wants to feel close to her parents now, but she doesn’t want to read the letters without Roger around. Maybe that’s a good idea considering the emotions she’d feel for them with Roger somewhere in the past.

Bree starts looking through the books on the shelves instead, and that’s where she comes across some of Frank’s. She remembers asking Frank to look after Young Ian’s deceased baby girl, and now she wants Frank to look out for Jemmy too. I love that she thinks of Frank in this moment. Of course he’d look out for his grandson.

What stands out for me is that she thinks of Frank’s spirit. She doesn’t ask the spirits of Claire and Jamie. In her heart, they’re still alive but somewhere in the past. It’s like they’re separated by an ocean instead of time.

While looking at one of the books, a letter falls out. It’s from Frank written for Brianna and makes it very clear that he knows Bree is a time traveler. He also knows that she goes to the past and that’s why he made sure Bree could protect herself. He wanted to do everything he could to set her up for a life in the past, and I adore that about him. It was always a theory up to this point.

Frank wanted to tell Bree something. Could it be that Jamie is her father? Could it be that she’s a time traveler? Frank is never that clear, but he does fear that Claire will take Bree through the stones and leave him. This is something Frank clearly feared. He worried about making one mistake and Claire leaving, but also knows that Claire keeps her word.

There are a lot of questions that come from this letter. The biggest is about Bree being “a dangerous person.” What makes her dangerous? We know she killed Stephen Bonnet, but Frank would never have read about that. Is it that Bree will do what she needs to survive and to fight for her family?

Her thoughts are cut off when there’s movement in the house. Rob Cameron has turned up looking for her. He wants her to tell Jem to tell him where the gold is. So Jemmy isn’t in the past, after all!

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

This chapter pushes the story forward for Bree. She is in danger, but we also learn that Jem isn’t in the past. What does that mean for Roger and Buck?

However, the foreshadowing in the chapter seems to be from the letter. What does Frank mean by Bree being “a dangerous person?” He went through a few descriptions that involved danger, with a lot focused on Bree being in danger, but he settled for her being the dangerous one. We haven’t got to that in the books that I can think of, so what’s going to happen in the 10th book that gives her that description?

Adapting An Echo in the Bone chapter

I expect to see this chapter in the series. While I wouldn’t usually expect Outlander to use a letter chapter without showing us what is being shared, this is different. This drives it home that Frank definitely researched the past and got Bree ready for her journey back in time. We also get that “a dangerous person” line making us wonder what Bree is going to do.

Of course, the end has to be used. Roger goes through the stones, and Rob is still in the present day. That suggests Jem is too. We need to see how all this plays out in the TV series.
