Claire receives letters from Jamie in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 89

Claire manages to save Henry Grey’s life at the start of Outlander Book 7, Chapter 89. From there, she can catch up with what’s going on with Jamie.

While the two are separated, they are always thinking of each other. We can see that in the letters that Jamie writes Claire and in the thoughts we hear Claire having.  They don’t want to be separated any more than they need to, but that doesn’t mean they sit and pine over each other. They will get on with their own things.

For Claire, it’s her medicine. She has helped save Lord John Grey’s nephew’s life. That’s the way it seems, anyway. Of course, something could go wrong, but Claire seems pretty confident that Henry will live. This could mean he gets to marry Mercy, who he can see is in love with Henry.

There is certainly some foreshadowing in this chapter. I’ll get to that in the foreshadowing section.

As for the adaptation, I’m not sure we’ll get it. If we do, it’s not going to be written exactly, especially when it comes to the letters. I’ll get to that in the adaptation section.

Let’s dive into An Echo in the Bone Chapter 89.

Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Claire and Denzell returning to the print shop. Denny is in awe of everything he’s just watched. I love how he is willing to learn from Claire, realizing that she is more skilled than he is and can teach him things.

Meanwhile, Claire is a little drunk on John’s good brandy and still running off some adrenaline from the surgery. She takes the time to share how she felt Henry’s life force, and that’s something she’s felt once before: when trying to save Malva’s unborn son.

Claire is sure that Henry will live, but she is worried that the penicillin won’t work quickly enough. She notes that Mercy may have been the one to help keep Henry alive. Mercy and Henry clearly lo each other, but Claire remembers that Mercy’s husband was the man Claire treated a few chapters ago. He was the man whose leg she amputated.

Did Mercy’s husband die? That’s something Claire considers, allowing her to consider whether Henry and Mercy will be able to make things work.

She then sees letters from Jamie. The first is from March, sharing Ian’s death and how Young Jamie is now going to take over the running of the house. Jenny wants to come to America as she has nothing left for her in Scotland. Jamie is worried about his sister.

The second letter is from April and is when Jamie is in France. He’s got Joan to the Convent and says that Joan seems happy. Jamie has been forming bonds and he’s complaining about the landlady of the place he’s staying at. Jamie feels like he’s being fleeced and has stolen some candlesticks for compensation. It sounds at the end that he has kept the candlesticks and the landlady never returned the money to him.

Jamie is ready to see Claire again, and Claire is ready to be with Jamie again.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There is some foreshadowing in the way Claire talks about life force. I think this is a hint that she is slowly coming into more of her powers. I sense that the blue glow that we saw from Master Raymond is connected to the life force. The blue glow is mentioned in other books in the Outlander series.

Claire mentions that she felt the life force of the baby during the c-section. She also felt it when saving Henry. These events both happened as Claire’s hair as started to turn whiter, and we know that she will come into her full powers when her hair turns white. This is all foreshadowing that it’s starting to pass.

Adapting An Echo in the Bone chapter

I don’t think we’ll see the full chapter written as it is in Outlander Season 7. Instead, we’ll see the events play out. Writing as Claire reading the letter and putting that on the screen would be boring. The show has always found a way to show us the events of the letters instead of telling us about them.

We may see Claire and Denny talking about saving Henry. However, this doesn’t have to take long, and it doesn’t have to be at the print shop. I want to see Denny excited about saving Henry and learning from Claire. It’s important to see this considering how many have been against Claire saving lives.
