Claire and Laoghaire come to an agreement in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 82

Laoghaire comes to Claire for help in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 82. It gives Claire all the ammunition she needs to get this woman out of her life for pretty much good.

Up to this point, the money Laoghaire demanded from Jamie in alimony has weighed heavily on Claire and Jamie. They’ve had to do a lot to be able to get the money, and they couldn’t escape it even when they remained in the Colonies. However, Jamie has needed to find a way out of it.

You see, it’s not just about him and Claire anymore. Joanie needs Laoghaire to remarry so she can follow her desire. Claire has a way to handle it all when it comes to Laoghaire begging Claire to head back to Philadelphia to save her grandson, Henri-Christian.

This chapter certainly foreshadows somethings to come when it comes to Claire and Jamie being separated. I’ll get to that in the foreshadowing section.

I have a feeling it will be used in the TV series. There’s no way that I can’t see it being used, and I’ll get to that in the adaptation section.

Let’s dive into An Echo in the Bone Chapter 82.

Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Laoghaire coming to see Claire. Laoghaire has received a letter from Marsali. Henri-Christian is struggling to breathe, and Claire immediately realizes that it is likely sleep apnea. This could be life-threatening.

Of course, Claire would return to Philadelphia to save Henri-Christian. Laoghaire doesn’t realize the bond Claire has with Laoghaire’s daughter and grandchildren, so Claire is able to use this to her advantage.

She will do it as long as Laoghaire marries Joey and releases Jamie from the alimony payments. This isn’t just for Jamie and her, but for Joanie, too. Joan wants to go to France to become a nun, and she can’t do that while Laoghaire and Joey live in sin.

Ned Gowan returns to draw up the contract. There are a few extra elements to the contract.

Jamie still wants to give Joan her dowry, but Ned isn’t certain that he should give the dowry since Joan isn’t getting married. Jamie says that Joan will be a Bride of Christ, so that means she needs her dowry. Joan only wants part of the dowry to gift to the convent.

Jamie will give the rest of the money for the upkeep of Balriggan. Laoghaire, who will own the place, will get £20 per year to use on the upkeep. There must be proof of the upkeep before Jamie gives anymore. This is a great way to ensure Laoghaire has a place to live, the place itself remains standing for Marsali and future occupants, and to make sure Joan’s dowry that he’d already promised goes to good use.

Claire will head to Philadelphia alone. It’s not something Claire and Jamie like, but Jamie needs to remain with Jenny for the time being. Claire will leave with Michael and Joan, who are on their way to France.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There is a little bit of foreshadowing in this chapter when it comes to Jamie and Claire being separated. Neither of them want to be separated, and it’s clear that this is going to be much bigger than it initially seems.

This is all a bit of plot development. Claire and Jamie need to be separated at this point. There needs to be a reason for Claire to head back to America before Jamie so that Jamie can be believed dead at sea. This is the perfect reason for this because, of course, Claire would go back to America to save Henri-Christian’s life.

I also think there’s a bit of foreshadowing when it comes to a comment about burning. It’s all about a fire to come that is going to take the life of a certain young grandson of Laoghaire.

Adapting An Echo in the Bone chapter

I expect to see this chapter used in the TV series. Claire and Laoghaire have such a long history, and we need to see this moment. We need to see Laoghaire need Claire for something, and this is the only way that makes sense for Claire to get Laoghaire to give up the alimony.

Plus, this is the best way to get Claire to leave for America without Jamie right away. It makes sense for her to go back for Henri-Christian, whether Laoghaire asked for help or not. This chapter reminds us of that, and I look forward to seeing Caitriona Balfe show us everything Claire is thinking with looks on her face since we won’t be able to hear her thoughts.
