Jamie is allowed to take Simon Fraser’s body back to Scotland in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 69

We finally see how Jamie and Claire will head to Scotland in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 69. It’s all thanks to the connection to Brigadier General Simon Fraser.

There’s a truce between the British and the Americans in this chapter. The two are evenly matched, and so both General Gates and General Burgoyne decide that it’s time to wave the white flag and go their separate ways.

This takes out the threat of William seeing Jamie. It also sets up the story as to how Jamie and Claire will be able to get to Scotland. What about Ian, though? Well, Jamie thinks of an option that is rather similar to a certain Bonnie Prince.

I would love to see the chapter used in the TV series, especially a mention as to how Ian could get to Scotland. We may see some of it, and I’ll get to my thoughts on that in the adaptation section.

It continues to foreshadow William figuring out the truth, though. I’ll get to that in the foreshadowing part of the post.

Let’s dive into An Echo in the Bone Chapter 69.

Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with the truce. General Burgoyne will allow Jamie to head to Scotland. As kin to Lord Lovat, Jamie is to accompany Simon Fraser’s body back to Scotland. Claire will go with Jamie, but Jamie needs to figure out how to get Ian out of hiding and back to Scotland with him. He thinks about dressing Ian up as Claire’s maid, which is very similar to how Bonnie Prince Charlie got out of Scotland all those years earlier.

As for Ian, he is currently in hiding. We find out that Captain Martin wanted Rollo killed for attacking him, and there is a mob after the dog. Rachel protects Rollo with her own body, and Denny is the one who knocks some sense into the angry mob. Why would they want to kill an innocent animal?

With Rollo saved, the focus can move to William. The British are heading home, but William is sad to leave some of his comrades behind. However, he misses his father, Lord John Grey, and that’s who he wants to see first. I love that we continue to have this connection. It shows the type of man John was as a father to William.

Claire watches the British leave from the woods. Jamie is there too, and he doesn’t make an effort to hide himself from William’s view. He’s relieved to see that William is out of harm’s way right now. It must have been so hard for him to see his son in battle, and on the opposite side.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

The chapter doesn’t foreshadow too much. It’s all about plot development to get Jamie and Claire back on their journey to Scotland. However, there’s still that element of foreshadowing of William finding out the truth. It’s a small bit, but it all comes down to Jamie not wanting to hide himself this time. He just watches William leave.

All it takes is a glance. William figures it all out. Right now, William wants to see Lord John Grey, but that’s not the case when he figures out the truth and what people kept from him all those years.

Adapting An Echo in the Bone chapter

I would like to see the chapter used. I want to see Jamie’s relief as William heads away from danger. And I do suspect that we will see this. I suspect that we’ll see the battle part of An Echo in the Bone as it does give us that storyline of father and son on the opposite sides of battle, a similar echo to Murtagh vs. Jamie in Outlander Season 5.

This chapter also gives us the reason Claire and Jamie are able to get back to Scotland. Not that we need it. They were supposed to be on their way to Scotland in the first place! However, I think we need these battles from American history to highlight where we are in the time period within the story.
