It’s time to find out how Claire and Jamie get out of the fort in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 52
We knew it was going to happen, and now we get to find out how. Just how did Claire and Jamie get out of the fort in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 52?
It all picks up with Jamie learning that a British officer has been captured. That British officer gives away some key details, and it leads to St. Clair deciding that it’s time to evacuate the fort. Jamie could work with St. Clair and others to get everyone out, but instead, he sticks with Claire.
Of course, Claire is focused on her patients. When is she not concerned with patients over her own safety?
This chapter certainly has some foreshadowing in it. I’ll get to my thoughts on that in the foreshadowing chapter.
I certainly expect to see it used in the TV series. I’m not sure it will take up a lot of time, but I expect it to be included in some sort of way, and I’ll get to why that is in the adaptation section.
Let’s dive into An Echo in the Bone Chapter 52.

Just the Outlander chapter
The chapter starts with Whitcomb returning. He has news about the British. That leads to Jamie being summoned to St. Clair’s house. It turns out that the scouts got a British prisoner, and this person is related to Jamie. It’s Brigadier Simon Fraser.
Fraser has given up some information about Burgoyne’s impending attack, and St. Clair decides it’s time to evacuate. He also wants to slaughter or free the animals. The idea is to make sure there are no supplies for the British in the fort, which would mean they would need to wait for supplies to come from Canada. It was a common tactic in war.
Jamie isn’t going to work with St. Clair on this. He’s choosing to stick with Claire. He refuses to see her wandering the wilderness with Mrs. Raven. He’s even willing to get into a boat if he has to.
The evacuation doesn’t go all that smoothly. There are thunderstorms and fires. It creates havoc for everyone.
Within all this, Claire wants to look out for her patients. She starts with Stebbings and Guinea Dick, who are happy to be able to go freely. Then she turns to Mr. Ormiston to give him tips on how to look after his leg. Ormiston asks her to give the boy Abram his lucky piece, but I really can’t recall who this boy is. It seems like something that should be big since the piece is 30 years old, but I don’t remember anything.
The two eventually come across Mr. Marsden during the chaos. He offers to steer the boat that Claire and Jamie will get on, but his men have disappeared. In the end, 18 people get into the canoe and off they go.
The ending is quite somber. Claire looks over at a bridge. Four volunteers need to destroy the bridge as the British come across it, and Jamie knows exactly what that means for everyone involved. It’s not good, and it’s a reminder of the darkness of war.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
I feel like there’s a little bit of foreshadowing in this chapter. When Jamie tells Claire that it was a family member who had been captured, I couldn’t help but think of William. In the end, it was Simon Fraser, but it’s clear that William is going to come up soon. Eventually, father and son will need to meet. They are constantly so close to each other.
I also feel like the books are foreshadowing more reunions with family. There’s a mention of Canada and British supplies from there. It’s only a matter of time before Jamie ends up reunited with family who have fled to Canada.
Adapting An Echo in the Bone chapter
I do expect to see this chapter used in the TV series. We need to see something like this, something that reminds us of war and the dangers within it. We need to see Jamie do everything he can to stay with Claire—although I wouldn’t put it past the TV series to use this as a way to split Claire and Jamie up again.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if we’re left wondering if William is the British officer captured at first. That would make an interesting cliffhanger.
Overall, the chapter isn’t too important, but it does remind us of the chaos of war. That’s something that will need to be focused on, especially if we see Bree and Roger learn where Claire and Jamie are.
