We see life for Claire and Jamie right now in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 35

After learning that Claire and Jamie get to Fort Ticonderoga in the previous chapter, it’s not surprising to see them there in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 35. The chapter is a little mundane for the most part, which gives us a look at real life.

I like some of these quieter chapters. We get a chance to see what life would have been like in the past. It’s not all drama all the time.

However, there are some parts that stand out. The biggest is at the end when it comes to Young Ian with a delicate matter. He wants to get to the bottom of what was going on with him and Emily when it came to having children, and this is such a beautiful moment for aunt and nephew.

I don’t see all that much in the way of foreshadowing in this chapter. There are signs of why the fort falls, but that’s about it. I’ll get to my thoughts on that in the foreshadowing section.

I do hope the end part of this chapter is included in the TV series. I don’t need to see all of it, but I do want to see Ian get to know more about children and what could have happened between him and Emily.

Let’s dive into An Echo in the Bone Chapter 35.

Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with mundane life at the fort. After that, Claire goes about as a doctor. One of her patients is a young boy with suspected mumps, and Claire is worried about that passing on. Jamie is too when he learns what it can do.

After that, Claire goes to see Captain Stebbings, who is still alive and kicking. He refuses to allow anyone but Claire treat him, although Guinea Dick refuses to disappear. He wants to see what Claire is doing, and he looks over Claire’s shoulder all the time.

Life in general at the fort is unpleasant. Claire talks about all the diseases that are spreading, and there are plenty of drinking idiots. She worries that something will happen while she’s there, and I love that her fears are echoed by Bree and Roger in the previous chapter when they learn Claire and Jamie make it here.

While in the middle of the thoughts, Ian interrupts. He starts with comments on the bridge that is being built and how General Burgoyne is planning on using the Iroquois League as weapons against the Americans. Claire doesn’t really understand why Ian is telling her this. It’s clear that Ian has another matter that is more delicate.

Claire finally gets Ian to share why he is there. It turns out that Emily had a healthy child, and Ian is upset about that. It’s not that Emily had a healthy child, but that it wasn’t with him. What does that mean about him? Can he not have children? Ian goes into the Mohawk beliefs surrounding spirits, but Claire explains that there could be something else.

It’s all about blood conflict that can cause stillbirths and miscarriages. Claire shares a little about mismatched Rh factors, and she makes it clear that Ian and Emily can’t blame themselves for stillborn children. This also helps Claire stop blaming herself and Jamie for losing Faith.

I love that we get this moment. Ian trusts Claire to be able to bring a scientific answer, and that’s just what she does. She does it in such a loving way, too, furthering that bond between aunt and nephew.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

I don’t see too much in the way of foreshadowing in this chapter. Really, it’s mostly about why the fall of the fort is going to happen.

However, I think there’s a small amount in Emily having a healthy child. This isn’t the last we’ll hear of Emily and her child. It gets us ready for a major reveal in Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.

Adapting An Echo in the Bone chapter

I would love to see the ending to this chapter included in Outlander Season 7. We know what the Mohawk believe, and we know that Ian has gained closure about Emily. What I want to see is Ian have this fear that he won’t be able to have children. After all, we know Rachel Hunter is coming into Outlander Season 7.

I want to see Claire discuss Rh factors. I want to see the two of them bond more. And with everything Ian has been trying to understand lately in the show, I do think that he’d want to know more about why he and Emily couldn’t seem to have children.
