Claire helps Jamie and Ian in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 3
Claire needs to tend to Jamie’s injuries in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 3. When it comes to Ian, she needs to help him emotionally.
This chapter picks straight up off the back of the previous one. Ian has killed Murdina Bug, and it’s clear that there will be consequences to his actions. However, it’s not like Murdina’s death was a pure accident. Ian had to kill her after she shot at Jamie.
That’s where the chapter starts. Claire needs to see what Jamie’s injury is. How serious is it both to his life and his manhood? After that, she’s able to help Ian deal with the emotional baggage of his actions.
I love that we get to see Claire work both physically and emotionally in this chapter. It also brings us some foreshadowing of the events in the next chapter.
Will it be used in the TV series? This will depend on how much of the previous chapter is used. I do hope we at least see Ian’s storyline as that will be important for character development.
Let’s dive into An Echo in the Bone Chapter 3.

Just the Outlander chapter
The chapter starts with Claire tending to Jamie’s injuries. The bullet from Murdina hit his leg, but it’s not clear initially how bad it is. Claire notes that it is just a graze, but it could have been much worse. It is close to both his private parts and his femoral artery.
Now that Jamie is patched up, Claire can go off in search for Young Ian. She knows that he will have gone into hiding of sort, a way to deal with his actions. After all, at no point did he mean to kill Murdina. He thought it was Arch or someone else working with him.
Well, it turns out Ian is hiding in a barn. There are a few animals in there with him, including Rollo who went out to find his best friend. Ian shares that Murdina was like a grandmother to him, and that he didn’t mean to kill her. He does feel guilty for his actions, although Claire doesn’t think there’s a reason to feel that way. Had Murdina not been going after the stolen gold, none of this would have had to happen. Does that help at all?
Probably not. Ian has killed before, but not someone like this who he cared about. He has to deal with the grief as well as the guilt.
This chapter is so important for me as a fan of Ian. We get to see so much development for this young man throughout the books. This is another layer of him becoming a man, especially a man of his time.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
The foreshadowing here is in what Ian will do in the next chapter. He offers his life to Arch. After all, an eye for an eye and a life for a life. We know that Arch won’t take Ian’s life right now, but that doesn’t mean he won’t come back for it later.
Other than that, I think it’s mostly a quiet moment between Claire and Jamie. We know Jamie is going to survive the bullet, and it’s time for them to decide what to do next. I guess with Ian’s reaction to killing Murdina, there is foreshadowing of Claire and Jamie wondering if Scotland is the better place for Ian now.
Adapting An Echo in the Bone chapter
I do hope to see some of this chapter developed in Outlander Season 7. I hope to see Ian killing Murdina kept in, so that we get to see his grief. This is an important part of character development for the character. Yes, we’ve seen the part where he chooses to be both Mohawk and Highlander, but we also need to see him handle the regret and loss of someone close to him.
