Jamie and co. run into a familiar face in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 105
Jamie, Roger, and Ian reunite with Claire in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 105. There’s another familiar face that turns up.
This familiar face is Manfred MacGillvery. He is in town working, but he did hide from Jamie at first. Now that he knew Jamie isn’t looking for him, he decides to help the Frasers find Brianna. He even has a direct connection to Eppie.
We also get to find out more about Bonnet’s deepest fear during the chapter. He wakes from a nightmare, and Brianna manages to comfort him. She uses comfort as a way to protect herself, but it’s also important to understand some of Bonnet’s fears.
It does foreshadow something to come. When it comes to a villain’s fears, we always know they’re foreshadowing something.
The chapter was partly used in the TV series. This is something I’ll get into in the adaptation section. Not all of it was needed and some of it couldn’t be included, but there was a way to work the important parts of the story.
Let’s dive into A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 105.

Just the Outlander chapter
There is a lot going on in this chapter. At the start, Roger runs into the minister who was supposed to ordain him before. The minister says that he will pray for Brianna, but there is a mention of God’s will. This bit makes Roger wonder once more whether ordination is right for him.
I think it’s worth remembering here that Roger doesn’t want to follow in his father’s footsteps. This isn’t about saving souls, but about helping the people of the Ridge. It’s very important to remember as it shows that maybe ordination isn’t right for Roger, but it’s all he can really think to do to help people.
Roger also shows his respect for other cultures. He listens to why Ian took Forbes’s ear. It’s a talisman (the Mohawk believe the talisman will chose a person) and Ian smokes the ear so he can wear it around his neck until he finds Brianna. Roger later ends up with the rub ring that Bree gave to Eppie and that becomes his talisman.
How does he get the ring? This happens when Jamie, Ian, and Roger get to Claire. She’s with Manfred MacGillvery and Eppie. Manfred admits that he saw Jamie initially and ran thinking that Jamie was after him. Now he’s willing to help if he can, and he recognizes the ruby ring that Eppie had.
Eppie now shares some information about Ocracoke, the dark moon, and wild horses by Bonnet’s house. It’s all clues for when and where Brianna will be. I love that Eppie didn’t purposely go in search for the Frasers and Roger, but she did share the information when she saw them.
Claire has some good news for Manfred in this chapter. She can cure his syphillis. That means he can marry Eppie and give her the life he believes she deserves.
At the end of the chapter, we head back to Brianna. She wakes to what she thinks is Jemmy needing her, but it’s Bonnet having a nightmare. He later tells her that his greatest fear is drowning, and she comforts him through the fear. She shares that she won’t let him drown, although it’s more to keep herself safe than to actually make a promise to Bonnet.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There is a lot of foreshadowing in this chapter. Roger keeps wondering whether ordination is right for him, and we know that in the end, there are a lot of other things going on that prevent it from happening. However, he still needs to find his place and figure out how he’s going to help the people of the Ridge.
Of course, Roger’s family will always come first. He does what he can now to get back to Bree, and he will do what he needs to so he can save Brianna, Jemmy, and Mandy in the future.
The other bit of foreshadowing is in Bonnet’s story. He’s terrified of drowning, which foreshadows that drowning will become his execution. However, Brianna has made him a promise.
Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter
Not all this chapter was used in the series. There was nothing about the talisman and Roger getting the ruby ring. This didn’t surprise me considering how the show has to condense things. We also didn’t get Manfred, but that’s because he doesn’t show up in Outlander and it would have been odd to throw him in at this point. Remember that all this took place in Outlander Season 5 instead of Season 6.
However, Eppie’s part is used. Claire ends up offering her medical treatment and that leads to her sharing what she knows about Brianna. It’s enough for everyone to get to Bree, and the way Claire got the information made a lot of sense for Claire’s character.
The other part used was Bonnet sharing his fear. We needed this vulnerable moment between the two. After all, Bree promising not to let Bonnet drown is a potential motivator for what Bree does when Bonnet is being executed. There was no way for the series to avoid it.
