Roger and Ian find Forbes in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 103

Roger and Jamie will stop at nothing to find Brianna, and we get to see the start of that in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 103.

We start with Roger and Ian finding Forbes. Once again, this part of the story is told from Forbes’s POV, which makes it clear that he does have an important part in this story. He didn’t just take Bree, but he is also the weak link in the entire thing.

At first, he holds firm. That is until he finds out that Jamie has his mother. Of course, Jamie wouldn’t hurt the older woman, but Forbes doesn’t know that. When he learns that Jamie could hurt his mother, he breaks and shares all.

The chapter wasn’t used in the TV series. I’ll get to my thoughts on that in the adaptation process.

What about foreshadowing? I didn’t really see any, except maybe what’s to come for Young Ian in the future. However, there was a lot of plot development in the story. I will get to my thoughts about Ian in the foreshadowing section.

Let’s dive into A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 103.

Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts from Forbes’s POV as Roger and Ian find him. They realize that he had something to do with it all. After all, Forbes felt slighted by Bree not accepting his proposal, and that has led to a feud between him and the Frasers ever since.

However, Forbes refuses to say anything. We then jump to Jamie’s POV, where he finds Forbes’s mother and aunt. The two are having a picnic, and Jamie invites them to his picnic. This gives him the opportunity to get an item of jewelry to give to a child to send to Forbes.

When we switch to Roger’s POV, Forbes gets a package that includes the jewel. He doesn’t think much of it at first, thinking Jamie wouldn’t hurt his mother. Roger makes it clear that as a Highlander, Jamie would hurt her. Forbes decides it’s time to tell the truth, including that Bonnet plans to take Bree to London.

Roger doesn’t think that likely. There is more opportunity for a pirate in the colonies, so he’ll stay there. He does have the name of the ship and some hope that he’ll find Bree. As he leaves, he turns back to see that Young Ian has cut Forbes’s ear off.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There isn’t that much foreshadowing for the story. This is all plot development to get Roger and Jamie to Brianna. That’s really it.

I guess the foreshadowing in this particular story is that Bonnet wouldn’t sail to England with Bree. Roger knows that Bonnet has another plan, and we late find out that he is into trafficking women. Sure enough, that’s more profitable than sailing to England.

The actual foreshadowing is in Ian. We can see this side to him that he’s learned from the Mohawk, but it’s also clear that the Highlanders would act like this too. Ian is finding a balance between who he was and who he has become so that he can turn into the man that he wants to be. I do see some of that in this chapter.

Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter

This chapter wasn’t used in the TV series. Forbes was used in a very different way. He sees that Bonnet is a way to get his hands on some money, including Jocasta’s plantation and some of her wealth. I loved the way the TV show handled this entire storyline because we got to see a devious side to Forbes.

I’ll admit that in the book, Forbes was more of this annoying antagonist. I never really felt that he was a threat to anyone. In the show, there was more of a threat. He was willing to play a long game until it all came crashing down on him. Then he showed his true colors.

I also didn’t overly mind missing the opportunity to see Ian cut Forbes’s ear off. I like that it was combined with Ulysses’s story instead, and we have had more time to see Ian’s story and some of his violent ways play out.
