We find out where Jamie is being taken in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 91

It was only a matter of time before we’d find out where Jamie was taken. That comes up in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 91. He’s not staying away from Claire for too long, though.

The chapter finds Jamie in a tight spot. Literally. However, he’s not panicking all that much. He knows that Ian is out there somewhere. Ian will have seen what happened and will come after him.

We get to find out who Richard Brown is working with in this chapter. It shouldn’t end up coming as a surprise. What it does do is set the plot for characters to come back before A Breath of Snow and Ashes is over. That’s what makes this chapter in the book so important. It’s not really foreshadowing, but I’ll touch on it in the foreshadowing section of this post.

While it was used partly for the series, it wasn’t in full. The TV show had to adapt a few things due to the handling of a couple of characters in Outlander Season 5. I didn’t mind the change. In fact, I really enjoyed it, and I’ll get to why that was in the adaptation section.

Let’s dive into A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 91.

Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with finding out where Jamie was taken. He’s in some sort of boat shed and he’s trapped in a tight space. He’s not panicking, though, which most people would. You see, he knows that Ian will have seen everything and will come for him.

Jamie is more concerned about Claire. He doesn’t know where she’s been taken, or why Richard Brown has gone with her alone. All Jamie is certain of is that Tom Christie probably won’t let Brown and his men kill Claire. Now Jamie just has to figure out where his wife is.

Ian does eventually turn up, and he knows where Claire is being taken. Brown and Forbes did work at Cross Creek, and Forbes said that a sheriff in New Bern might take Claire. This is good news. They can get to New Bern once they get out of the current situation. It’s also not surprising that Forbes is the one working with Brown. Of course Forbes would do whatever he could to cause problems for the Frasers.

If Claire is somehow found innocent at her trial, the scandal would be enough to cause problems for Fraser’s Ridge. It would be ripe for picking, with Forbes someone who wants to get his hands on it to cause problems for Brianna.

It also turns out that the plan was to get Jamie on a boat to England. That boat is one of Stephen Bonnet’s ships. Why is it not surprising that Bonnet is involved in all of this?

Jamie considers killing Bonnet. However, he needs to get to Claire first. So, he and Ian plot their escape without anyone else seeing them. I love that Jamie chooses Claire over revenge.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There isn’t that much foreshadowing in the chapter. This is more about plot development. It’s clear that Forbes and Bonnet will continue to be a problem for the Frasers. They have their own plans, and they’re willing to work together when the need arises.

We will get to see them again. Jamie has more and more reason to hate both of them. However, for now, they need to get to New Bern to save Claire.

Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter

The chapter was partly used in Outlander Season 6. It wasn’t exact, though. Forbes and Bonnet were both dealt with in the fifth season. With the way TV shows film and how schedules can clash, this decision wasn’t that surprising. Both of their stories needed to be wrapped for the TV series, and the only guarantee was to do it in the fifth season.

So, how would the show handle putting Jamie on a boat? That’s simple. They just need a nameless character to agree to take Jamie back to the UK. In the show, it’s Scotland.

Ian doesn’t arrive alone, though. He brings the Cherokee and John Quincy Myers. I adore the way the series wrote this. In TV, you don’t form bonds to just leave them to one side when something major happens. Jamie formed a bond with Bird by telling him the truth about the future. Bird repays that and makes it clear that he will always fight with Jamie. Bird trusts Jamie, and the trust can go both ways.
