We know a lot of history included in Outlander is based on real events. Are the places also real? Is Lallybroch a real place in Scotland?

“Take me home to Lallybroch.”

It’s a line that we’d all love to say. Is it even possible to say something like that to anyone, even if it’s not Jamie Fraser?

We know that Outlander does include real events and real locations. The Battle of Culloden on Culloden Moor is real, and the Palace of Versaille is certainly a real place. What about Lallybroch? Is it a place to visit?

Lallybroch in the Outlander books isn’t real

Here’s where we start with some bad news. Nobody can take you home to Lallybroch. The place written about in the books is not a real place.

Diana Gabaldon opted to create a fake place as Jamie’s home. The area of Scotland is real, and the Frasers were certain in and around that area at the time (there will be some still around), but the actual home with the tower is not real. There is no Laird of Broch Turach.

The Outlander filming location is real

So, what’s the place used in the TV series if Lallybroch isn’t real? This is the place that you can go to visit. You’re not looking for Lallybroch, though.

You’re looking for a place called Midhope Castle. People still live there. The area is still filled with working farms. However, it has become popular for tourists, and there are times that the area is open to visit. You won’t be able to go into the house, though!

There are times that the area is closed to tourists. This can be because the family wants to close it off, and during the pandemic it was closed due to the local laws during the time period. However, it’s usually closed if there is filming taking place. That’s been the case recently, suggesting that Outlander Season 7 will see some scenes back at Lallybroch.
