Lizzie and Josiah have a request of Roger in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 74

While the chapter starts with some important topics for Bree and Roger, we end up with Lizzie and Josiah finding a way around Jamie’s instructions in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 74.

It al starts with Bree and Roger spending some time together. Jemmy is there too, but he’s asleep. This allows Roger and Bree to spend time together without clothes and have some important discussions.

One of those is when to tell Jemmy that he can time travel. Is that something they should do now, or is it something to leave until later?

The discussion is interrupted with Lizzie and the Beardsley twins showing up. They have a request, and we know as readers that this is a way for the three to get around the instructions that Jamie has given them. Roger and Bree don’t know that just yet. They find out in the end.

The chapter certainly has a tiny bit of foreshadowing in it. I see it in the discussion about time travel and the part with the car. I’ll get to that in that section.

As for the adaptation, this chapter was certainly used. It just wasn’t used in the exact same way, but I really enjoyed the way it was used in the TV series.

Let’s dive into A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 74.

Just the Outlander chapter

We start with Bree and Roger talking. They start with thinking about driving around, and whether Roger will ever get to drive at 85mph again. This does get a little steamy, but then the conversation moves onto something else. They need to determine when they’re supposed to tel Jemmy that he can time travel.

The sooner the better, Bree thinks. She would have preferred knowing about time travel and who Jamie was early on. If she’d have talked about it, the nuns at her school would have told her to stop lying and that would have been it. Roger didn’t have a choice to know or not. Nobody was there to tell him he could travel until he was older, but he did know that Reverend Wakefield wasn’t his biological father.

Roger points out that it isn’t safe for Jemmy to know just yet. Jemmy will talk, and they are in a very suspicious time period. We have to remember just how much people think Claire is a witch for being able to heal.

Their conversation is cut off by Lizzie and the Beardsley twins arriving. Lizzie wants Roger to marry her and Josiah with Kezzie as a witness. She’s even wearing the dress that was made for her for her wedding to Manfred. Roger wants to know why it has to be right now, and Lizzie says that it’s because of the baby and she doesn’t want the talk about the baby to an unwed mother to spread. She and Josiah also want a quiet one with just Keziah.

Lizzie and Josiah also point out that while they would prefer a Catholic mass, it’s hard to find a priest right now. Roger agrees to handfast them.

It’s only the next day that Bree and Roger find out the truth. Claire and Jamie explain the situation, and it’s clear that Lizzie and the twins are not going to let themselves be separated. Keziah has even cut his thumb with the same ‘T’ that Josiah has. They will look the same to everyone on the Ridge, making it harder for anyone to say anything.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

Some of the foreshadowing is in the part of the chapter with the car. Bree wants to know if Roger thinks he’ll ever travel so fast again. This is foreshadowing that the two will end up going through the stones again.

We also have that conversation with Jemmy. The topic of time travel is going to come up. There will soon be another baby on the way, a baby who needs 20th-century medicine. That leaves the MacKenzies no choice, so Jemmy is going to learn the truth very soon.

There is also a brief moment where Bree thinks about Bonnet. What if Bonnet comes back for Jemmy? Should Jemmy know the truth about that? Well, the topic of Jemmy’s paternity is going to come up again in a chapter. We finally get to know the truth.

Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter

This chapter was used but in two separate sections. We get the Lizzie and the twins first. They show up in the penultimate episode after the truth comes out to Claire and Jamie. They want to be handfasted so that Jamie can’t split the three of them apart. It’s only the day after that Bree and Roger learn what they did. I love that this gets its own section and a little more focus, because I do enjoy this scandal.

The part with the car and the discussion about time travel are kept for the Outlander Season 6 finale. The topic of time travel is important. Jemmy probably won’t remember the stones from Season 5, and they didn’t end up traveling anywhere so he wouldn’t have known what could have happened. Eventually, he will need to find out the truth, though.

Splitting it up the way the show did it made sense. The Lizzie part was contained to one episode, while the important discussions gave Bree and Roger something to do on the way to Edenton.
