Jamie ends up in some trouble on the road in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 65

Jamie is out on the road when he comes across five men who cause trouble in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 65. We see the trouble Jamie is going to face as he attempts to switch sides in the coming war.

We know that Jamie wants to be on the side of Independence. However, he can’t fully switch just yet. It’s a treasonous act at this point in time, and he can’t risk anything happening to the people of the Ridge as well as his family. He needs to time the switch just right.

This has led to questions about his loyalty. When he comes across five men on the road when he’s waiting for Major MacDonald, he realizes the trouble that he’s in. It doesn’t help that one of the men is Richard Brown.

This chapter wasn’t included in the TV series. That’s not surprising considering the way the show has to manage things. We’ll get to that in the adaptation section.

I don’t see too much in the way of foreshadowing in this chapter. It’s just a plot point to remind us of the trouble Jamie has found himself in right now.

Let’s dive into A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 65.

Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Jamie kicking himself for talking poetry with Major MacDonald. Had they not been engrossed in conversation, Jamie would have been alone when he came across the five men. Two of the men are strangers, but he recognizes the other three, and one of them is Richard Brown.

He knows that the other two men are Whigs. They want freedom from the Crown, and it’s clear that they are on their way to the Continental Congress. That’s where Jamie wants to go, but this situation is going to prevent that from happening.

The men claim that Jamie is still with the Crown. They must be if she’s still working for the Governor. Is it possible that Jamie is a spy? That’s something the men think, and they attack Jamie.

Fortunately, Jamie thinks on his feet. He manages to get out of dodge, and he finds Major MacDonald in the woods. By the time they get back to the road, they see that Major MacDonald’s horse has been taken, but Gideon remains. Gideon’s saddle is damaged, but the men decided not to attempt to take the horse.

Major MacDonald notes that they won’t be able to get Jamie in on the Continental Congress to pass information back to the Governor. This is what the Crown believes Jamie is doing, but we know that he also wants to switch sides.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

I guess the foreshadowing here is how people will take the news when Jamie does eventually switch sides. It’s not going to be easy for those who he has called friends over this time. The men who think that Jamie is a mole have already acted out.

There’s also some foreshadowing of trouble among the ranks. Things aren’t going to go smoothly at first, and that’s because people have different opinions on how to tackle problems. For example, the Quaker who is in the group doesn’t want violence and understands why Jamie protected a few people in Cross Creek. Others aren’t so supportive of peace.

Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter

The chapter wasn’t used in the TV series. This isn’t too surprising. It does drag out a storyline that there wouldn’t be the time for in the show. Things need to speed up, and that means cutting down this back and forth where it looks like Jamie is trying to play both sides.

During the series, we saw Jamie tell Lord John Grey already that he is going to be on the Patriots’ side. This hasn’t reached others yet, but it’s only a matter of time.

I don’t mind that this chapter was switched out. It would have been more characters for the sake of it and it is a little redundant. It’s best just to keep things condensed in a TV series.
