It’s time to learn about Young Ian’s time with the Mohawk in Outlander Season 6, Episode 4

As expected, Outlander Season 6, Episode 4 brought us the story of Young Ian’s time with the Mohawk. Here’s everything that happened during the episode.

Outlander Season 6 continues to bring more of those quieter, favorite moments from A Breath of Snow and Ashes. That included a quiet moment between Claire and Jamie at the start of the episode. Who didn’t love Jamie using the words “Greased Lightning” and “Thunderstruck?”

It’s good to get some of these quiet moments. Some elements of the show feel more like the first season, and I think we’re seeing the pay-off of Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan becoming producers on the series to get these moments.

However, there isn’t the time to remain focused on these. There’s a war brewing.

Jamie gives Fergus an important job

Jamie needed to get a message to New Bern. That meant sending Fergus out on the journey while Jamie headed out to the Cherokee to deliver the guns. We get to see a slightly happier Fergus, and there’s also a hint of things to come for him. Take note of his moment reminiscing about printing the news.

There isn’t too much time to focus on Fergus, though. Major MacDonald, Jamie, Young Ian, Roger, Arch Bug, and Brianna, along with a few others, are testing out the guns that were delivered for Bird. They need to make sure the guns are good.

Anyone else love Roger’s excitement about hitting one of the targets? It’s a shame Brianna couldn’t be happier for him, but she’s clearly got something on her mind. She knows what’s to come for the Cherokee.

Bree knows the guns won’t be enough to save the Cherokee. She goes through the things that will happen to the Cherokee, including the Trail of Tears. You can see why it plays on her mind. There isn’t much they can really do to stop this.

Getting Young Ian’s time with the Mohawk

If you wondered if we’d ever see Young Ian become part of the Mohawk tribe, you’ll be relieved to know that Outlander Season 6, Episode 4 started with that. We went straight back to the Outlander Season 3 finale when Young Ian remained with the Mohawk and completed the course.

We get to see the ritual Young Ian went through. The chief shared that the ritual was important to clean all the white blood out of Young Ian. He is now adopted in the tribe. And it’s clear one woman there is happy about that happening.

Young Ian also gets his Mohawk name. Wolf’s Brother.

When Young Ian and Jamie get to the Cherokee, Young Ian immediately recognizes the horses. The Mohawk are here, and that includes Kaheroton. This is a chance for Young Ian to go through his story with the Mohawk and the loss he faced.

He met his wife, Emily. He only called her that because he couldn’t say her name properly. The two quickly formed a bond as she helps him learn the language. Something I love in this is that we see very much like the Highlanders. This is a great chance to see just how much the Scottish clans and the Native American tribes were alike, despite the Scots not really wanting to admit that.

We get a chance to see the tribe tell stories, and Kaheroton wants to hear a story from Young Ian of Geillis. It’s a great bonding moment for Young Ian, and it’s easy to see why this tribe felt like a family to him so quickly.

We jump to a little later with Emily pregnant. Unfortunately, this isn’t a pregnancy that is going to work out. Emily suffers a stillbirth. Young Ian wants to be by her side, but it’s for the women now. Kaheroton tells Young Ian to head out to the woods to pray and, of course, Rollo is by his side for this moment. Young Ian turns to both the Christian God and the Mohawk gods in his hour of need.

She got pregnant again but suffered a miscarriage. This is where we learn about the Mohawk beliefs. The tribe believes that Young Ian’s spirit isn’t Mohawk. It’s not strong enough to work with Emily’s spirit. Young Ian is sent back to North Carolina. He doesn’t want to go, but as we know from Season 5, he doesn’t really have a choice. He returns anyway, but it’s not without seeing that this is really what Emily wants.

To make matters worse for Young Ian, he finds out that she’s moving on with someone else. She’s going to be with Kaheroton instead. It’s no wonder Young Ian doesn’t like Kaheroton at the Cherokee village.

The only thing I’ll say is that I miss the bonding moment Young Ian and Bree have with this moment. I love that he told Jamie and it made sense to bring up his Mohawk past in this episode of Outlander Season 6, but the moment with Bree was so special to me.

It is an important moment in the show, though. Jamie shares all about Faith with Young Ian.

Jamie meets another Indian Agent

It wasn’t all about Young Ian. We get to meet another Indian Agent, Alexander “Scotchie” Cameron. Jamie quickly hits it off with the man, but it’s clear that things aren’t going to go all that well. Scotchie wants to travel west, which means passing over treaty lines. Jamie points out this is wrong, but Scotchie believes that some of the other tribes will sell the land.

After delivering the guns, Young Ian talks with some of the Mohawk and finds out that Kaheroton and Emily had a son together. This leads to a fight between Young Ian and Kaheroton. This is why Scotchie ends up in a dual.

Scotchie breaks up the fight and insults Kaheroton. When Kaheroton demands an apology, Scotchie makes it clear that he will only dual.

Young Ian struggles with questions after learning that Kaheroton had a son. This is the reason why I do like that Young Ian opened up to Jamie. As Young Ian questions whether God is punishing him by taking his daughter, Jamie uses this time to share his worries about the soul of Faith. Jamie and Young Ian have some similar stories in the fact that Jamie didn’t get to hold Faith just like Young Ian didn’t get to hold his daughter. Jamie offers a beautiful thought about death after life. “We come home to the Lord.”

With that, Young Ian goes to speak to Kaheroton and takes him Jamie’s pistol for the dual. Kaheroton wants Young Ian to go to Emily and his son if he dies, giving Young Ian a bracelet that is the same as the one Emily once gave Young Ian.

While that goes on, Jamie tells Bird that the women in his family see what’s to come through dreams. It’s the easiest way to share a “prophecy.” He wants to give Bird a fighting chance after the Revolutionary War. Jamie wants Bird to help his people to hide when it comes to the war so there’s a chance they could escape and live. Bird agrees to pass the story through the generations.

Bird just has one question. Did Jamie pay a great deal for his wife? “She cost me all I had…she was worth it.”

When we finally get to the dual, Scotchie turns early. Young Ian saves Kaheroton’s life, and Jamie says that Kaheroton can fire at will. Scotchie panics and begs for his life, leading to Kaheroton to choose to fire the pistol into the air and allow Scotchie to live with his shame. Young Ian sends Kaheroton back to the Mohawk with Emily’s bracelet.

With all this, Young Ian gets closure. He places the wolf’s head necklace that Emily had given (a symbol of her tribe) into the water as his way of saying goodbye and letting go.

This whole thing has helped Young Ian realize that he can be both Ian Murray and Wolf’s Brother. Jamie points out that he has been called many names. Young Ian can call himself whatever he wants. All that matters is who he is in his heart. However, Jamie decides he will resign as Indian Agent. He can’t be everything anymore.

Claire tests out the ether

With Malva becoming Claire’s apprentice, the two need to practice using the ether. Josiah and Lizzie are the two Claire asks, and Josiah offers to go first. When Malva starts flirting, Lizzie decides to offer to go first instead to make a good impression.

Malva is excited to see the ether at work, while Josiah is concerned. Next it’s Josiah’s turn, helping Lizzie see that it did work.

Now that Malva has seen it in work, she can see why Tom calls it the “devil’s work.” She’s not going to tell him what they’re doing or he’d stop her from going to see Claire.

At the end of the episode, Kezzie wants to know what it was like to be put under. We continue to see these little bonding and flirting moments between Lizzie and the twins.

Meanwhile, Malva wants to know what Claire writes in her book. She’s a curious wee thing and gets to see all the drawings Claire has made as well as all of her notes. Her curiosity is extremely clear at the end of the episode, When Jamie returns, Claire can’t wait to get her hands on him. Who is spying on them? Malva of course, which is going to be important for something she says in later episodes.
