Brianna and Jamie work together for one of Bree’s projects in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 49
We jump back to Brianna in Outlander Season 6, Chapter 49. While she and Jamie work on digging for one of her latest projects, they come across a disturbing find.
This is a great chapter to see Bree and Jamie together. There’s a sense of pride in Bree, even if she’s not doing something that would be considered for women during this time. After all, he knows that Claire does things that aren’t considered for women and he is proud of her for that. It makes sense that he’d be proud of Bree too.
While they’re digging to help Bree get what she needs for a waterworks, Jemmy and Germain come across a small find. It leads to a few questions, and it’s clear that this is going to come up in a later chapter.
The conversation later moves onto the scars on Jamie’s back. What does Germain know about Jamie? What has Fergus shared? We get to see a bit more of that dynamic in the chapter.
There is certainly some foreshadowing in the chapter, and it’s not just about the find in the forest. There’s a bit of foreshadowing about Roger.
I’m not sure how much of this chapter is going to be used in Outlander Season 6. We’ll certainly see Brianna “invent” a few things, but will the waterworks be one of them?
Let’s dive into A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 49.

Just the Outlander chapter
The chapter starts with Jamie coming across Brianna digging alone. He helps her with it, which is certainly needed when it comes to a large boulder that they need to move together. We’re reminded of Bree’s size and strength in this moment as it is father and daughter working alone together with Germain and Jemmy just watching.
Brianna is making a path for water for her waterworks. Jamie is proud of her work and her knowledge.
The chapter moves on when Jemmy and Germain find some small items in the forest. There is something that has been burned. They’re bones, and Bree runs through the type of animal it could be. It wasn’t an animal. Jamie points out that the bones are that of human fingers.
He rules out the local Cherokee. The Indians wouldn’t do this. Who has, though? And why? All Jamie knows is that it has the sense of the Highlands about it.
At the stream, Jemmy jumps into the water. Brianna initially panics because he can’t swim, but Jamie encourages her to give him a minute to figure it out for himself. Germain is there and helps Jemmy figure out how to swim. They have fun in the water for a bit, and then get back out.
That’s when Germain and Jemmy discuss Jamie’s scars on his back. Jemmy is shocked to see them. Germain explains that Fergus told him Jamie is a silkie who has had his fur cut from him. That’s why there are scars there. Jamie goes along with the explanation and describes what a silkie is.
When walking back home, Bree sees a charm smudge. Jamie warns her not to touch it.
Brianna puts it all together. Later, she turns to Mrs. Bug to find out if there are any Scottish charms that involve bones of man. Mrs. Bug confirms it. When Roger comes home humming The Deasil Charm, Bree considers whether Amy McCallum was responsible for it all.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
We certainly get a little bit of foreshadowing in this chapter. The bits with the charm and the idea that it comes from Amy McCallum is more plot development than foreshadowing. There is something linked to some of the travelers, but not Amy McCallum specifically.
It’s Roger being away a lot that foreshadowing something coming up. There is talk around the area about Roger and his feelings for Amy. He spends more time with her than with Bree. It’s clear that Bree isn’t worried, but it’s something that needs to be nipped in the bud quickly. This isn’t the time period for this sort of gossip. It could get a lot of people in trouble.
Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter
I’m sure some of this chapter will be used in Outlander Season 6. We’re sure to see some of Brianna finding her place in the past. She has skills that may not be suitable for a woman, but they are excellent for the whole family. She can help make life just a little bit easier for herself and the people around her.
However, there’s no need for all the chapter to be used. The bit that stands out the most is the bits with the charm. That could be included with just Bree walking through the forest or something. She could even just mention it in passing. The same with the waterworks. We don’t need to see her building it or working on it. We just need to know that she’s doing it. There’s time for other “inventions,” and we know we’ll see the matches so there’s one.
