Claire manages to test ether with Malva’s help in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 42

Bobby Higgins returns in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 42. It’s the perfect time for Claire to test out her ether.

Claire hasn’t had any willing participants up to this point. To be honest, she hasn’t asked many more people other than Tom Christie when she operated on her hand. She wants to test it though, bringing something a little closer to 20th-century medicine to the 18th-century world.

Fortunately, she has that during this relatively short chapter. We get to see Malva continue to step in as her assistant, with certainly some foreshadowing of things to come. It’s hard to see the foreshadowing at first, but there is a line in Claire’s thoughts that immediately stands out when you know the story.

I would love to see this chapter used in the TV series. I think we’ll get something similar to it if not the same. I’m not entirely sure Bobby Higgins is going to be used just yet, and that’s where some of the chapter may need to change. I’ll get to my thoughts on that in the adaptation section.

Let’s dive into A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 42.

Just the Outlander chapter

We start with Bobby arriving. He’s not ill anymore. Everything has cleared up, although there is a comment about his loose stools at one point. He isn’t worried about that, though. It’s to do with all the beans he’s been eating. He is grateful for Claire’s help, though, even if he still finds talking about his bowel movements uncomfortable. I’m reminded of Duncan Innes when Claire tried to talk to him about bowel movements, too.

Bobby is going to hang around for a while. He knows that Jamie has a letter for Lord John Grey, but Jamie is currently away. We know Jamie wrote the letter and was supposed to leave it with Claire to give to Bobby, but it seems that hasn’t happened.

With Bobby around, Claire now has the chance to test out ether on patients. Lizzie and Bobby both agree to be her test subjects. Brianna has made a mask to make it possible to use the ether, and Malva is there to be the assistant while Claire makes her notes.

Everyone is shocked to see how Claire can put people to sleep and bring them back to consciousness. Malva notes that she can see why her dad would call it’s the devil’s work. Only God should have these abilities.

Lizzie and Bobby discuss what it was like being under. They don’t think it was like sleep, and Lizzie notes that the soul goes with the angels during sleep as they watch over the body. This wasn’t the same thing.

Bobby also notes that he saw a dark woman as he was waking up. He didn’t recognize her, and she made him uncomfortable. Hallucinations are common, but it’s something for Claire to note.

The conversation moves onto Lizzie’s upcoming wedding. This is when Claire notes that there is attention for Malva but her father and brother keep people away. The talk is cut short when Claire realizes that everyone is suffering from the effects of the ether so needs to get the cloth outside and open the windows for ventilation. That’s the tests over for a day.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

We do get a chance to see that Claire is bringing more of the modern-day practices to her surgery. This is going to have a knock-on effect. People already view her as a witch.

However, the real foreshadowing is in Malva’s storyline. Both Tom and Allan Christie are protective of Malva. It’s easy to understand why Tom is. He is her father, after all. Allan is also protective, but that’s for another reason. Allan doesn’t actually keep the men away.

He’s encouraging Malva to sleep with multiple men because she’s pregnant with his child. This is one of those shocking storylines at first, but as you look back, you can see where a lot of the seeds were sown.

Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter

I’m not sure how much of this chapter will be used in Outlander Season 6, but I do think some of it needs to be. Bobby Higgins may not be used. It’s going to depend on whether the show will actually focus on his storyline. Bobby would be a great character, but I do think the show could use an already established character for this. Maybe John Quincy Myers would offer to be a guinea pig.

I would love to see the ether used. We also need to see Malva helping Claire in the surgery. It’s important to see that bond form between them, making Malva’s storyline all the more traumatic and bittersweet.
