Claire and Jamie head to Brownsville in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 34
It’s time to deliver Lionel Brown’s body back to his family in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 34. Claire and Jamie arrive in Brownsville with company.
There’s no way that the Frasers can tell the Browns exactly what happened to Lionel. They decide to go with the story that he succumbed to his injuries, which is a reasonable tale to tell.
However, one thing is clear. Richard Brown had no idea what had happened in the days running up to this. Donner hadn’t returned with the news. The men who had attacked Claire are still out there rotting in the ground.
There is a little bit of foreshadowing in this chapter. It’s more of a statement that’s enough to keep a particular character in our minds. I also think there’s a little bit with Young Ian, who chooses to ride with Bird and his people instead of Claire and Jamie.
The chapter was partly used for the series. It wasn’t used in the exact same way, and I’ll break that down in the adaptation section.
Let’s dive into A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 34.

Just the Outlander chapter
Claire and Jamie had no choice but to return Lionel Brown’s body to his family. They stuck with the story that Lionel had succumbed to his injuries, although Jamie made it very clear who Lionel had been working with.
What I loved is that Bird joined the group. Bird and his people had been accused of burning the houses down. Now that Jamie knew the truth, he made sure Bird knew it. It’s clear that Bird wants to make it clear to the Browns that he doesn’t tolerate such a thing. For now, he lets it rest.
The Browns say little. They take Lionel’s body and that’s it.
On the way home, Claire thinks about Donner. He wasn’t at Brownsville, and it’s clear that he didn’t return there. The Browns didn’t know about the attack. So, is Donner dead after all? Does she even hope that he’s dead?
She ends the chapter asking Jamie if it’s all over. It’s clear that it’s not, though. Jamie knows these types of things are never over. They can expect trouble from the Browns again at another time.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There are a couple of elements of foreshadowing in this chapter. The first is the mention of Donner. We know that he’s not dead. He’s going to come back and cause more trouble. The fact that he’s not in Brownsville makes it clear that he’s figuring out his next steps. Donner doesn’t want to remain in the past if he doesn’t have to.
The other bit of foreshadowing is Young Ian. He’s comfortable with Bird and his people. It’s clear that Young Ian found a family when he was with the Mohawk. We still don’t know the full story of why he returned, and it is going to come up. I think it’s important to remember how comfortable he feels with other tribes. His heart is still there with the Mohawk for now.
Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter
We got some of this chapter adapted in Outlander Season 5. Jamie returned to Brownsville alone with Lionel’s body. Instead of saying Lionel succumb to injuries, Jamie opted to make it clear that he killed the man.
With Lionel’s involvement in Claire’s abduction in the first place, it made sense for the show to change this part a little. Plus, it makes it clear that Richard doesn’t think this whole matter is solved. The Browns will always be a threat, which is exactly what Jamie notes in the book chapter. The two got to the same conclusion is a slightly different way.
Since the show opted to combine Claire’s leaflets under Dr. Rawlings’s name and her abduction, I didn’t mind the change at all. From a TV show’s development point of view, it made a lot of sense to me. The book just doesn’t work chapter by chapter for a TV series. It really is as simple as that.
