Claire needs to move forward with her life after the trauma in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 30
It had only been days since Claire had been rescued, but it’s clear she’s trying to move forward with her life in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 30. That means getting ready to see Lionel Brown.
However, not everyone is happy with that idea. Jamie has strict orders against it, and both Fergus and Young Ian will go through with those orders. Claire doesn’t exactly argue right now.
There is some discussion of what to do with Lionel Brown, but a later part of the chapter moves on to Thomas Christie, who needs some medical attention. It really is about life getting somewhat back to normal already. There’s no time to think too much about the events.
This chapter does have a little bit of foreshadowing in it. I’ll get to my thoughts on that in that section of the post.
We didn’t really see it used on the series. There just wasn’t the time to include it all, and I’ll get to my thoughts on that in the adaptation section. If you’ve read previous posts about the Outlander Season 5 finale, you’ll know I actually liked the way the series handled this storyline.
Let’s dive into A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 30.

Just the Outlander chapter
The chapter starts with Claire at home with Fergus and Young Ian. Jamie has gone up to fix the roof, and the two men share that he has given strict orders that Claire isn’t meant to see Lionel Brown. Jamie just wants to keep his wife safe, physically and mentally.
Jamie also needs to figure out what to do with the man. It’s important to have some sort of trial for him. They need answers from Lionel first, finding out as much as possible about the events that had happened up to this. After all, it’s now clear that Hodgepile and his men were involved in the burning of cabins.
How will Jamie get the answers? Will he resort to torture? Claire has to wonder if she’ll even care about Lionel’s death. She is happy that the other men died. She’s starting to lose ay sympathy for these men as she thinks about everything that happened to her.
Executing Lionel Brown is going to be tricky, though. They have Richard Brown to deal with.
At the end of the chapter, we see Claire back in her surgery. Thomas Christie shows up needing some medical attention. The two have a chance to chat, and Claire learns a little more about Tom. This is a chance to learn that he has read Tom Jones. Well, it turns out someone read it to him.
Who would that be? Not his wife. Tom Christie burned his wife’s books. It was Jamie who would read from memory. This was one of the books, and no, Tom did not like the main character. I do love that we get to learn a little more about who Tom Christie is in this chapter. It’s important for the chapters to come.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
The parts involving Lionel Brown are plot development. I won’t get too much into that, but it does continue in the next few chapters.
The foreshadowing I see is in Tom Christie’s part of the chapter. He notes how the reading of Tom Swift was a chance for the prisoners at Ardsmuir to think about what they would do in particular situations. I do find this important for Tom’s feelings he develops for Claire and the way he’s involved in future storylines.
This chapter helps to lead to Tom standing up for Claire when she is accused of murder. He has his moments of darkness, but he would like to be a good man.
Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter
The chapter hasn’t been used in the series. There is time for some of it to be. We haven’t been introduced to the Christies yet, so there will be time to bring that part into the series.
The bit that wasn’t really used was everything to do with Lionel Brown. Jamie did have to decide what to do with him, but Marsali took it upon herself to handle the situation instead. This was purely to keep the storyline shortened to allow the time to tell the important parts of the story. There just isn’t the time to adapt every little part into the TV series.
I liked the way it was handled. A lot of what happened in the book could be assumed for the series. It could happen off-screen. We got what couldn’t be left to the imagination, and that’s important to me.
