Roger returns home to learn Bree worries about Fergus and Marsali in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 26

Roger returns home after the difficult experience in the woods in Outlander Book 6, Chapter 26. Brianna starts by consoling him, but there are more pressing matters to discuss.

While the chapter starts with Roger returning home still feeling heavy from the events of the cabin in the woods, it moves on to other matters. Brianna starts light with the groundhog kiln she’s been digging, but it then moves onto Bree’s concerns about Fergus and Marsali.

Brianna worries that Fergus is abusive toward Marsali. She hopes that isn’t the case, and it doesn’t fully make sense to her. It’s not easy to get to the bottom of this, though, and she needs to tread carefully.

I know that a lot of people view wife-beating as normal in the past, but we’ve seen with other storylines that it wasn’t. While men would discipline their wives, people wouldn’t always stand by if the beatings were for no “good” reason. We’ve seen Jenny help to save a boy and his mom from an abusive husband.

This chapter hasn’t been used in the series yet, but I do think it will be. We know that Fergus and Marsali are going to face trouble in their relationship in the coming season. There is a lot of foreshadowing in this chapter for Brianna and for Fergus.

Let’s dive into A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 26.

Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Roger returning from his trip with Jamie. He wants to find solace in Brianna’s arm, but there are other matters to attend to. The first is the hole that she’s digging.

Brianna has made room for a groundhog kiln. It turns out that she may have found a way to make it possible to get some underboard heating. We get to see Brianna trying to bring a touch of the modern-day to the 18th century, and this is a great way to do things. If it remains small, it wouldn’t be that easy for anyone to see what she’s doing, which could help to keep prying eyes away.

The discussion of getting the pottery to work into pipes brings up the topic of Marsali and Fergus. Brianna notes that she’s worried about Marsali. Fergus’s attitude is changing, and Brianna worries that Fergus is beating her. She also notes that he’s drinking more and not helping Marsali do anything.

It is hard for Fergus to do the heavier chores because he only has one hand. However, he doesn’t help with the children. We all know his view of “women’s work,” and he’s not interested in doing any of that. Roger offers to talk to Roger about it. He can’t let all this go on for longer, but he can’t talk to Jamie about it first. Jamie would kill Fergus if he heard the truth.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

This chapter certainly foreshadows Fergus’s storyline. It does make us think that Fergus is beating Marsali, but we all know Fergus. While he is a man of his time, he wouldn’t beat his wife. There is something going on for him to turn into what he is becoming.

This is just the start of Fergus’s depression storyline. Brianna points out the problem. Fergus doesn’t really know what to do with himself. He doesn’t really have a place because of his hand. Fergus is struggling with how he can be a good husband and a good father in this time period, especially when he sees his wife, his father, and his brother-in-law doing it all for him.

We know that Fergus has found things he is good at, though. Roger and Bree need to get to the bottom of it all to help the entire family.

Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter

I do think that we’ll get this chapter in Outlander Season 6. We know that we’ll get to see more of Fergus and Marsali. There have been teases of what’s to come for the two of them.

We’ve already seen that Fergus doesn’t really have much to do at the Ridge. I’m starting to wonder if this has been on purpose. He doesn’t feel like he has a place, and this leads to his depression.

On top of that, Marsali fears she’s going to hell and then she gives birth to Henri-Christian. Fergus doesn’t know how to deal with all that in the books, and we know it’s coming in the show. It may not be exactly the way the book has developed the storyline, but I do hope to see quite a bit of it.
