Just the Outlander chapter

It all starts with Roger getting information from his contact. The last that Roger’s contact found was that Jamie Fraser had been sent back to Lallybroch. This contact is interested in hearing what happened to Jamie, though. It’s one of those little mysteries.

Brianna is sure that Jamie is the Dunbonnet, which leads to Fiona sharing her grandmother’s tale about the mysterious man. She shares that the Dunbonnet turned himself in to save his tenants. It was a bad famine and the people got the gold from the English. The Dunbonnet was taken to prison.

This is good news. By Jame going back to prison, Roger can start looking through historical documents. They need to look through the prison lists, knowing that all names would be recorded. However, it’s a long search.

Jamie never went to any of the bigger prisons. It’s at the very end of the chapter that Claire finds Jamie’s name in the list of those who went to Ardsmuir Prison, one that Claire has never heard of. By this point, everyone else is in bed. She gets the chance to just think of Jamie alone.

During the chapter, we do get Claire’s flashback of her time at med school. Due to Brianna’s age, Claire had to get babysitters, and Bree didn’t like them. Claire shares on one occasion where Brianna’s babysitter just left her alone, fed up of Claire coming home late. After a while, Brianna went searching for her mom and was knocked over.

While there was no permanent damage, Claire tells Frank that she needs to give up med school. It’s not possible. Frank stops her in her tracks. He won’t let her give up this dream.

One thing Frank points out is that Claire knows exactly what she wants to do. She has a passion for healing that he doesn’t have for history. It’s rare that someone will have this passion, which is something Frank is a little jealous of. However, he knows that Claire can’t give up med school, so he agrees to take Bree to work with him when she’s finished school.

There is a mention of how Frank has once said kids at the workplace is unprofessional, but it sounds like the secretary’s grandson is unruly. Frank will be able to keep Bree busy in his office.

Claire also tells Roger that he’s an honest person. It’s rare that someone is so open and honest right away, and she’s only met three people before her. We know Jamie and Master Raymond, but this is where she mentions Joe Abernathy for the first time.

And so, we end another chapter from Claire’s POV. The next chapter takes us back to Jamie and to Ardmsuir Prison.
