5 standout moments from Claire on the Outlander Season 3 premiere

The Outlander Season 3 premiere marked a stretch of time with Claire and Jamie separated by the stones. On this day, the Outlander Season 3 premiere aired for the very first time, and we have to mark the occasion.

The premiere came after a long Droughtlander. The longest we thought we’d have to deal with. At no point did we suspect a Droughtlander would happen due to a global pandemic!

What an episode to bring the show back to us with, though! This is, by far, one of my all-time favorite episodes. It’s in the Top 5 when it comes to the series overall, and it’s going to be hard to knock it out of that.

Like with the current anniversaries of the Season 1 episodes, I’m marking the Season 3 anniversaries by looking back at the best moments from Claire and Jamie throughout the specific episodes. Here are Claire’s five best moments from the Outlander Season 3 premiere.

Trying to make things work with Frank

Claire tried to make things work. She tried to go on like nothing was wrong and like she didn’t want to go back to the past. She made promises, and she was damned if she didn’t keep them.

One of those promises was to Jamie. She promised that she would go back to Frank and raise their baby with him. Then she made a promise to Frank, to leave the past in the past; to leave Jamie where she thought he’d died.

It was never going to be easy. However, from the start of the episode, we see her trying.

Cooking over the campfire

When the stove doesn’t light (remember those darned stoves?), Claire gave up and sat on the couch in defeat. That’s when she came to realize she had another option. She could cook over the campfire.

Something that I love about this moment is that she thinks further back to the past. While part of her will be thinking of the 18th century, she also thought of her Uncle Lamb. Maybe that’s just because there was someone with her who wouldn’t understand time travel, but she didn’t seem to second guess her answers about where she learned to cook over the campfire.

The hesitations came from mentions of Frank and how he would like his food. They came from thoughts of Jamie. I adore that it didn’t all come back to Jamie, and Claire was able to think to further back.

The day with Frank’s boss

Men like Frank’s boss grind my gears. There are still far too many like them who think that a woman’s place is in the kitchen and raising babies. I can barely bite my tongue around them, so I completely relate to Claire as she sits in the chair and has to allow this man to talk to her in the way he does.

There’s nothing she nor Frank can do without risking Frank’s employment. You can tell that Frank doesn’t really like what his boss says, but he has to bite his tongue, too.

Claire has to do it all the more so. She knows what she wants and it sets up for Claire going to medical school in the next episode. However, in this moment, she just has to bide her time.

Unable to break fully from Jamie

Throughout the Outlander Season 3 premiere, Claire struggles with this connection to Jamie. She can’t break from it throughout the pregnancy, even unable to let Frank touch the growing bump. Okay, it’s her body, but Frank wants to be a father and part of being a father is getting the chance to feel a baby grow.

However, it shows that part of her is still stuck in the past. She’s grieving the loss of her husband, and we see that depression deepening with each scene.

It’s an important reminder of what those years in the past meant. Something to remember is that she says to Frank that they were the best years of her life. She throws it into Frank’s face that she’d rather be back in the past. It’s hurtful, but that’s grief.

The fear of losing her baby

At the very end, we see how births happened in 1940s America. Yes, that is how many women were forced to give birth in hospitals. It showed a stark contrast to the female-led births of the 18th century.

However, it was the moment Claire woke that really broke my heart. She was terrified that her baby wasn’t around; her baby was no longer in her stomach. There was this fear of Paris all over again. Had her baby died?

We see that fear, but there’s also the relief when she sees Frank walking into the room with baby Brianna. There’s a sense of hope after the fear. If only the nurse didn’t say anything about the red hair!
