Diving into Outlander Book 1, Chapter 6

We enter Part 2 of the first Outlander book, following Claire through life at Castle Leoch. While this is a chapter used for the show, there were some substantial changes that were likely due to TV series needs more than anything else.

It’s always interesting to me to see these changes. Sometimes they make sense from a TV point of view or because the show needs to make sense in a condensed form to non-book readers as well as the book-first fans. But we’ll get to that.

Something that stands out in this chapter is the way Claire is treated. She’s a guest but she’s not a guest at the same time. People are certainly suspicious, but then there are others who are just kind. We also see that Claire has a lot to learn.

There is a little foreshadowing in the chapter. It’s more of getting a sense of the personalities of characters, so you can tell how they’re likely to act in later parts of the story.

The chapter itself is relatively average in length. It sits at a little more than 40 minutes on Audible, but I do admit that once again, it took me longer to read this time. I’m looking out for the details and trying hard not to get the show in my head through the descriptions.

Let’s dive into the chapter and the changes for the show.

Focusing on the Outlander chapter

During Outlander Book 1, Chapter 6, Claire got used to life at Castle Leoch. She found her way around and got to know the workings of the time. Most importantly, she had a chance to see “Hall,” which is an important part of the culture.

Before Hall is the dinner. She sees Colum and Dougal again and gets to meet Hamish. The dinner is more of a chance to see Claire out of her time and really like a fish out of water. She’s about to eat before saying grace, which would be normal for her. However, the people of the past would always say grace before a meal.

“Hall” is where Colum listens to the grievances of the people. It’s not just a Scottish thing but has been used throughout the world and throughout time. If you watch Vikings, you’ll see a version of it. Even Game of Thrones included a form of it throughout the series (and the books). The lairds (or the people in charge) would need to hear the grievances and find a way to deal with the situation.

Claire is one of the matters to discuss. She’s the fifth one, which she tells us is strategic. However, she doesn’t quite go into detail as to how this is a strategic placement, not in full detail, anyway. It doesn’t help that she doesn’t have time to explain that too much. After all, she’s too busy trying to curtsey in her slippers.

Dougal is the one that stands up to arrange for her to stay. It’s clear that this is more of a show than anything else. Dougal and Colum don’t trust Claire, and she can tell that at this point. She’s a guest but not a guest at the same time.

Claire does mention how the men use English for Claire’s matter. It’s to make sure she knows what is being said rather than the Gaelic being a way to push her out. Of course the Scots would use their own language for everything else.

Something that I know will stand out for many is Angus. He’s not the short best friend of Rupert (more on that as we get to the show connections) but a large man who carries out the punishments. He’s the one that carries out the punishment against Jamie, who stands up for Laoghaire, so it’s not as personal as it becomes in the show. Again, more on that soon.

In the end, the chapter sees Claire try to make life work at Castle Leoch. She has to do her part, and for now, it means helping Mrs. Fitz. It’s clear that she’s happy working, which makes sense considering the way she would have worked in the past. She’d always been one to pitch in when with Uncle Lamb. He certainly set her up for life in the past.

Claire then gets another chance to speak to Jamie. She learns more about him and that connection grows. It moves us onto the foreshadowing within the chapter.

Foreshadowing within the Outlander chapter

During Chapter 6, a lot of the foreshadowing happens during and after Hall. It’s all about Jamie and Laoghaire.

We get a sense of this woman who is known for her “loose” behavior. However, instead of letting her take the punishment, Jamie stands up for her. He wants to protect her dignity. We get to see this gentle side of him—the type of man who will stand up for injustices or to protect others.

I also wonder if this is a foreshadowing of the trouble Laoghaire will cause later. Her father makes a note that she hasn’t followed his orders, which suggests she may have be caught doing something at an earlier time.

Claire is the one to tend to Jamie’s wounds, but she’s not alone. With Mrs. Fitz around, she learns more about the medicine of the 18th century, specifically the use of leeches. It’s not something we’d even consider now, but Claire notes how leeches work well.

For me, this is foreshadowing of the type of doctor Claire will become. She wants to bring some of the modern medicine to the past, but she also knows that she needs to make use of items around her. She needs to learn the ways of the past to help people. And it’s a hint that she’ll end up becoming the healer for Castle Leoch at a later stage.

After all, Mrs. Fitz says that Colum needs to figure out what to do with Claire—figure out how Claire can help around the castle. For now, she’s fine with Mrs. Fitz, but that’s not where Claire will stay.

Connecting to the Outlander TV series

This is a chapter heavily used in the second episode of the series but there are some substantial changes. One of those is definitely Angus, who instead of being Colum’s man, he is Rupert’s best friend. For a TV show, I think this was a great change. Rupert and Angus definitely became my favorite pair on the show.

Because Angus isn’t there as the man to dish out the punishments, it’s Rupert who has to do it on the show. There’s more of a personal element to Jamie being the one beaten, with Dougal being the one to decide when the beating ends. In the show, this certainly foreshadowed elements of the trouble between Dougal and Jamie.

A slight change to the storyline is the time in the garden. Claire is out there picking flowers, which is when she meets Geillis. Yes, Geillis shows up in the show earlier than in the books, and it’s Geillis who explains what’s going on at Hall. Mrs. Fitz is off in the background worried about Laoghaire.

After all, the witch trial storyline couldn’t take too long to build up to, and before that, we had to get to know Geillis quickly to see a friendship form between the two women but to also hint that there was something more to the redheaded woman. Introducing her as the one to help Claire navigate Castle Leoch certainly made a lot of sense for the sake of the show.

For the book, it made sense to keep her out for now. We were getting to know Castle Leoch and the characters at the same time as Claire. There was time to develop the storyline slower, which is a major benefit of novels over TV shows.

And while Claire isn’t a matter at Hall, we still get to see what it’s like. We see the hierarchy and the way Colum commands a room. Claire notes in the chapter that Colum isn’t ashamed of his legs and he wants people to see them. Both in book and show, I have a lot of respect for the man because of this.
