Outlander Season 5 Key Art and Marketing Shoot - Sep 17-21 2019

Outlander takes us inside the world of each episode to give us a look at thoughts and decisions behind the scenes. Here’s a look at inside the Season 5 premiere.

One of the things that I adore about Outlander is how we go inside the world at the end of each episode. We find out about decisions made, such as why moments from the book were adapted for the TV show. Inside the World for the Outlander Season 5 premiere gave us a look at transforming that one long day in the book into one episode.

After Matt B. Roberts admits that writing the premiere episode was hard (and he deserves the pat on the back), he and Maril Davis explain why. In the novel, the wedding takes up 200+ pages. There’s a lot happening before the wedding, including Claire and Jamie dealing with people’s concerns and the baptism of the children.

Much of that was cut out, and part of that was because the show moved the wedding from the Gathering to Fraser’s Ridge. Why would they do that? The two EPs explain that it was all linked to the Big House (which was bigger than what they intended by the sounds of things). They wanted to be able to show off the house, and what a chance to do that than at the wedding?

Plus, the idea was to make sure the wedding was about that. In the book, the wedding is an ending to the Gathering and more about the actual Gathering. But the wedding is the big moment that may Brianna and Roger fans have been waiting for.

The two also went into the addition of the kilt. This is something that happens earlier in the books for a dinner party at River Run. However, the EPs wanted to do the kilt at a time that would be more momentous. It’s something that I recently mentioned, how keeping the kilt for the call to arms put far more weight into Jamie’s decision to wear it.

At the end of the Inside the World segment, there’s a touch on Jamie and Roger’s relationship. You’ll want to check out the clip to see what Roberts and Davis have to say about that.

Outlander continues on Sundays on STARZ.
