During the NYCC 2019 panel, STARZ released the official Outlander Season 5 teaser. It’s time to break down everything that happens in it.
As expected, STARZ released a teaser for Outlander Season 5 during New York Comic-Con 2019. It was a chance to see a glimpse of what to expect in the fifth season.
While we’ve watched it numerous times, there are certain moments that stand out. We get clues of what to expect, the moments from “The Fiery Cross” that will be included in the season. Now is the time to break down the teaser and find the top takeaways.
There are seven that stand out the most to me. Before getting into them, though, how about we take another look at the teaser trailer for the season.
Here’s a look at the top seven takeaways from the Outlander Season 5 teaser.
7. There’s a feeling of Culloden’s buildup
Throughout the teaser, there’s one feeling that I get. It feels like the show did in the second season, with the buildup to Culloden. Jamie and Claire are side-by-side, staying in tents in the wilderness to get ready for a coming war.
Once again, Jamie suggests that Claire head back to her own time, where she will be safer. It’s clear that he wants everyone to return to their own time to remain safe, even if it means that he’ll be left to die on the battlefield.
This time, Claire will likely put up a fight. She says that she will do “what must be done,” but why do I get the feeling that it’s to send Brianna, Roger, and Jemmy to the future and for Claire to remain with Jamie. After all, she was just a shell without him the first time.

6. Claire doesn’t want her daughter to stay
Naturally, Claire wants Brianna and the others to go through the stones. We still don’t know if Jemmy can (unless you’ve read the books, of course!) but Claire doesn’t want to risk everyone’s lives.

She feels a sense of guilt for everyone being in the past in the first place. Despite missing Bree, Claire didn’t want her daughter to come through the stones, knowing how dangerous it is in the 18th century. Brianna never even showed any signs of wanting to go through the stones until it came to finding the information about the fire.

It’s not surprising that Claire wants Bree to head back through the stones. There’s a war coming and, right now, they’re on the wrong side of it.
5. Brianna isn’t certain about Claire’s actions
Brianna mentions to Claire about “playing God.” It’s clear that Claire is going to use her knowledge of the future to help change a few events in the past. This likely won’t be to prevent the Revolutionary War, but maybe to ensure a few people along the way aren’t killed if Claire can help it.
Is it like playing God? Or is it just doing some good with the knowledge she has? After all, Murtagh once pointed out that he wouldn’t want to be like Claire, having all that information of the things to come and not being able to do much about it.
If you’ve read “The Fiery Cross,” you’ll know that there are times Claire’s knowledge of the future can be a hindrance. She knows about the diseases that people are inflicted by and not have a way to cure them in the time she’s in—although she knows she could cure them or at least help them in the future.
We know from NYCC that we’re going to get to see more of Claire doing medical treatments. This is likely where the statement about playing God comes in.

4. Murtagh continues to rally the Regulators
The Regulators are going strong. While Murtagh says that they don’t have a leader, it’s clear that he is the one that’s rallying everyone together. He’s the one that’s keeping the passion going against the government. And, he’s the one that Governor Tryon has deemed the leader.
Murtagh continues to rally the Regulators in the Outlander Season 5 teaser. You can see him clear in the middle of a riot. Windows are being broken and redcoats are being burned.
This is going to cause problems for Jamie and Murtagh. They are on opposite sides of the war right now. How long will that last?
3. Roger understandably wants to go back
When Roger went through the stones, it was to protect Brianna. There was always the plan to return to his own time. Of course, things have changed.
Roger and Brianna have to make a decision on their next steps. Understandably, Roger still wants to head back to his own time. However, Brianna makes a point that their family is “here.” They’re in the 18th century, and it sounds like Brianna isn’t interested in going back to her own time.
Will Roger be willing to leave everyone he loves behind, including the boy he has declared is his son? I don’t think we have to worry about it, but it is a conversation the two are going to have to have.
One of the issues for Roger is that he doesn’t feel like he belongs in the 18th century. He’s a professor. There’s no work for him in the current time. Brianna has been ready for this trip to the past without even realizing it. Roger will need to find something to do to make him want to stay or feel needed in the past.

2. Roger isn’t going to have it easy
There’s a moment in the Outlander Season 5 teaser that looks like Roger is being dragged out of a house. It’s clear he’s fighting back, scared about what’s to come. And if you’ve read the books, you likely know what this moment is.
Roger doesn’t get it easy in the fifth book. There’s a moment where we almost lose him. It looks like this is one of those moments, and possibly linked to what shocked and scared expressions on Brianna and Claire’s faces in a promo photo.
It’s all going to link back to the conversation that Bree and Roger have about going back. Maybe he should have gone with that gut instinct.
1. There are glimpses of the Big House
We knew the Big House was coming. Jon Gary Steele had mentioned it in a tweet. What none of us realized was that the Big House would be so big!
There are a few glimpses of the house in the Outlander Season 5 teaser. We get to see how far away it is from the cabin, allowing Brianna and Roger to have some time away from Claire and Jamie to raise their son.
Of course, there will be questions about how Jamie built the house. Remember that Brian Fraser managed to build the whole of Lallybroch. This is a family known for building extravagant places for the people they love. Jamie is handy and he’ll likely have some help from the likes of John Qunicy Meyers and a few others around him.
