The new Mary, Queen of Scots movie dropped its first trailer last week. While there may be inaccuracies, it’s going to be a movie for Outlander fans.
There’s no getting away from the inaccuracies of the new upcoming Mary, Queen of Scots movie. I’ve already shared what they are from the promo alone, but why one may not be that bad–as long as you know it’s fictional. Now it’s time to look past the inaccuracies though. This is a movie for Outlander fans.
Whether you know about Mary, Queen of Scots or not, this is going to be a movie to watch at the end of the year. Falling in the middle of Outlander‘s fourth season airing–and likely around when a Christmas break will be taken–it will give fans something to bide their time. Here’s a look at five reasons it’s perfect for you.
5. It’s Scottish history
One of the things many Outlander fans have fallen in love with is Scotland and its history. Mary, Queen of Scots is going to be packed with Scottish history. After all, it’s about the last Stewart monarch and the woman who birthed the dynasty that would join two kingdoms.
Mary, Queen of Scots has an important part in the Jacobite reign, too! She was the grandmother of King James II of England/VII of Scotland. That makes her the great-grandmother of the Jacobite James Francis Edward Stuart and great-great-grandmother to Bonnie Prince Charlie.
She was also just as controversial as her descendants, fighting for the kingdom of England against her cousin Elizabeth I of England.

4. There are some amazing costumes
Just looking at the promo, you can see how much work has gone into the costumes. One thing that history fans didn’t like about The CW’s Reign, which was based on the same Scottish queen, was the costume department. It was all about pretty dresses that certainly weren’t historically accurate. Outlander has always gone for accurate costumes and it looks like Mary, Queen of Scots has too.

There’s even the accuracy of the wig that Elizabeth I wore. She was an extremely vain queen, especially after her bout of smallpox. It’s going to be exciting to see many more beautiful, accurate, and amazing costumes.
3. Outlander locations have been used
Mary, Queen of Scots should be set in Edinburgh Castle for much of it, but that’s not the case. And you can tell from the trailer. However, there’s something interesting for Outlander fans. The movie is set in some of the Outlander locations!
Mary’s Meanders had shared back in 2017 that some of the locations would be closed off for filming. Mary, Queen of Scots and Outlaw King were both named, with exact dates given for filming at specific locations. By the way, Outlaw King stars Steven Cree and is about Robert the Bruce!
One of the most iconic Outlander filming locations in the new movie is Blackness Castle. It was used as the garrison Jamie had to storm with an unloaded pistol to save Claire from Black Jack Randall.
2. It’s a period setting
Even if it wasn’t Scottish history (and there will be some English involved), the fact that it’s a period movie will be intriguing for many. After all, it was the use of 18th-century Scotland that pulled some fans into Outlander.
Expect to see a number of period costumes, and not just the ones you see in the trailer. You’ll see how the people lived, especially in the Scottish and English Courts. History will come to life through the movie, even with the odd inaccuracies.
1. There’s plenty of drama
If you love the drama of Outlander and the fast-paced moments like chases, fights, and skirmishes, then you’re likely going to love Mary, Queen of Scots. Granted, I have no idea how close to history the movie will stick when it comes to Mary’s life. However, her real life was full of drama, heartache, and surprises.
This is a woman who married three times. A woman who had been raised in France and had to return to Scotland as a young, grieving widow, ready to rule a country that didn’t really want her. She was a Catholic in a Presbyterian land, constantly under watchful eyes. You may know how the story ends, but this will be about the journey to get there.
