Happy Father’s Day! This is a day to celebrate all the Outlander dads for everything they’ve done.
Fathers come in all shapes and sizes, especially in the world of Outlander. They also come from different time periods! They’ve all stepped up to the plate in their own ways, showing that time doesn’t make too much of a difference. As it’s Father’s Day today, it’s a good chance to spotlight all the Outlander dads, past, present, and future.
There are some spoilers for the future books if you’ve not read them yet.

Let’s start with the two men Brianna is proud to call her fathers: Frank and Jamie. While Frank may not have been Brianna’s father biologically, he stepped up and raised her as his own. In fact, it was only after Frank died that Brianna ever knew the truth, showing that he never even showed that she wasn’t his. There are many men like that today and they deserve celebrating–as many do it without any gratitude or even asking.
Then there’s Jamie Fraser. He’s not had the chance to be a dad to Brianna in the Outlander TV series yet, but we’ll get to see that relationship unfold in the fourth season. The books see it unfold further.
Jamie isn’t just one of the Outlander dads to Brianna, though. He’s taken in Fergus, become a father to the young French orphan. This all came to a head in Outlander Season 3, when Jamie officially gave Fergus his last name, making it clear that he viewed the boy as his own; that this was his family. He’s also a father to young Willie, although secretly, and has helped raise Marsali and Joanie in his short, invalid marriage to Laoghaire.

The Wakefields
There are two Wakefield men to celebrate, although one of those also goes by the name MacKenzie. Let’s start with Reverend Wakefield, a man who took his nephew in and raised him as his own. Roger knew that he was adopted, but he never thought anything bad about his uncle. In fact, he took the reverend’s last name in the present day, showing that he looked up to the man.
And, of course, Roger is the other dad to celebrate. We’ll see him become one of the Outlander dads Season 4, but he’s taken it in his stride throughout the books. It’s going to be an exciting story.
The Murrays
Ian Murray can’t be forgotten, even if he isn’t with Jamie and Claire right now. He has high expectations of his children and isn’t afraid to use corporal punishment against them if he believes it’s the best way to discipline his children. We’ll get to see a little more of him as a father in the fourth season.
There are other Murrays in the clan who become fathers in the books, but it’s Young Ian that we need to spotlight. He’s the father of a deceased child in the novels, which is heartbreaking and makes it easy to overlook his role. He also currently has one on the way and there’s a snippet about his life with his new wife and child from the “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone” Daily Lines.

The brothers MacKenzie
Let’s not forget Colum and Dougal, who are both fathers to the same boy. Colum claimed his son as his own, but the child was actually fathered by Dougal. This is something Claire realizes, but it turns out that it was all a plan. Colum needed an heir and Dougal and Letitia gave him one knowingly.
The two have been important men in their son’s life. While Colum raised his as laird of a household, Dougal could allow him to have some fun and get him ready for the war side of things.
Brian Fraser and Murtagh
Two men who cannot be forgotten about are Brian and Murtagh. They both helped to raise Jamie and made him the man he is today. In fact, Jamie continues to think about how his father raised him with opinions both for and against treatment. While we don’t see a lot of Brian, we know that he was a loving father and a strict but fair man.
As for Murtagh, well, he looked out for Jamie when nobody else would. He was willing to sacrifice his life for his godson and literally went to the ends of the country in search for him in the first book (and season). This was a man who may not have agreed with every decision but went along with them to make sure his boy was safe.

Fergus Claudel Fraser
It’s time for a spotlight on Fergus. By the end of “Voyager,” Marsali finds out she’s pregnant and the two remain in Jamaica when Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian head back to Scotland (and find themselves in the Colonies). This hasn’t happened in the series, but it’s likely that Marsali will find out she’s pregnant here, even though she said she doesn’t want to be yet.
Fergus and Marsali have a number of children in the novels, but they’re not all born without issues. One is disabled and it leads to depression and heartache for poor Fergus. Seeing this storyline play out is going to be bittersweet, but Cesar Domboy will surely act the chops off to bring it all to life for us.
Lord John Grey
We can’t forget Lord John Grey, can we? When Jamie had to move on from Helwater to protect Willie, he turned to Lord John Grey for support. He needed to know Willie would be cared for, and of course Lord John Grey accepted the responsibility. The question didn’t even need to be asked.
Throughout the years, Lord John Grey raised the boy as his own, although Willie knew that his parents had died. It wouldn’t be until he’d learn the truth about his biological father that the relationship soured. Despite this, John deserves celebrating as someone who took on a child when he could have just said no considering the time!
