Outlander- Starz
When the first book came out over twenty years ago, fans already had imagined would have made a great Claire and Jamie. Writer Diana Gabaldon has spent a great deal of time and eight books with descriptions of every character. Due to the fan expectation, casting a show like Outlander could have been a nightmare. The expectation of fans to get big named actor to play Jamie must have been overwhelming. Outlander producers were able to find Jamie a lot quicker than anticipated and came. Most fans were skeptical of Sam Heughan would be able to encapsulate Jamie Fraser. Sam Heughan acting resume was a little thin before signing on to Outlander, and he did not look like the Jamie Fraser from the book, but his charisma won fans over quickly. Caitriona Balfe has a similar thin resume when it come to acting but has clearly demonstrated she can play the heroine, Claire Fraser. Some casting and producers would be leery about picking two relatively unknown actors to lead a new show, but they apparently saw what we saw in the first episode. Sam and Cait show exceptional commitment to the storyline and off the charts chemistry. The lead actors might not have been as well-known as everyone expected, but the producers surrounded them with some of the most well respected English and Scottish actors. Graham McTavish and Bill Paterson are both well-respected actors in Scottland. Gary Lewis and Tobias Menzies have lengthy film and television credits.
